Teaching

As a former assistant professor, I taught a variety of courses in the Advertising Sequence within the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University including Introduction to Advertising, Creative Strategy, Account Planning and Advertising Management. My teaching specialization was Media Planning. With my agency experience as the foundation, I also introduced the Account Planning course to the Texas State advertising sequence curriculum in 2008.

In 2017 and 2018, I co-taught a course with Dr. Marye Tharp on Consumer Behavior in the Marketing Department at ORT University in Montevideo, Uruguay. My topics included Usability/User Experience, Consumer Anthropology and Qualitative Research Methods.  My lectures were in English with discussion in Spanish.

My teaching style reflects my years as a focus group moderator. I avoid the traditional “sage on the stage” university teaching style by using engagement techniques to encourage active learning.

I use a variety of active learning strategies to help students engage with each teaching objective. Some of my favorite classroom strategies include:

  • Think-Pair-Share
  • 1-Minute Papers
  • Connecting course content to current events
  • Graphic Organizers
  • Focus Group Demo
  • 20 Minute Case studies
  • Annotated MRI exercise (with colored pencils and rulers)
  • Guest speakers
  • “Low-stakes” presentations
  • Group work days
  • Group semester-long client projects
  • Final, professional quality client presentations
